1st April 2012 to 31st August 2012
An exhibition of work by German photographer August Sander (1876-1964). Sander was one of the greatest and most influential photographers of the 20th century. During his whole career he photographed individuals and groups of people that he then classified according to their occupations and position in society. This lifelong attempt to document the German people resulted in the ambitious project entitled People of the 20th Century.
The exhibition is taken from a major collection of over 170 prints, recently placed on long-term loan to ARTIST ROOMS courtesy of Anthony d'Offay. The prints were produced from the original plates by August Sander's grandson, Gerd Sander, who himself is a photographer and master printer. Together the collection of photographs gives a brilliant overview of Sander's achievements as an artist, photographer and recorder of history.
ARTIST ROOMS On Tour is an inspired partnership with the Art Fund - the fundraising charity for works of art, making available the ARTIST ROOMS collection of international contemporary art to galleries throughout the UK. ARTIST ROOMS is jointly owned by Tate and National Galleries of Scotland and was established through The d'Offay Donation in 2008, with the assistance of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, the Art Fund and the Scottish and British Governments.
